beautiful people! Thanks for having me today.
I’m here
to talk about my Top 10 favorite books of all time—so let’s see how my list
matches up with yours! I would love to hear your Top 10, so please be sure to
leave a comment with your chosen few. You can also just comment with your
current favorite, rather than a list. It’s all good!
The List
A little bit
about my tastes: I’m usually a fan of fantasy and anything paranormal, from
demons to vampires to ghosts. I enjoy epic fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal
romance, and anything with riveting action, well-rounded characters, and a
believable plot. My biggest pet peeve with a book is when the author breaks the
rules of their own world and/or lets plot holes through.
The first
two books in this list are outside my normal genres, but they’re books that
marked me for life. So bear with me.
# 10—The Giver by
Lois Lowry
This is one
of those books I can’t shake. Even a decade after I first read it, I still
think about it. The open-ended finale to the book left me puzzling as to what
actually happened, and the story’s metaphors continue to inspire me. This book
deeply moved me, and it’s a required reading I actually enjoyed.
# 9—Jonathan
Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach
My dad
recommended this one, and at first I was baffled. A book about a seagull?
Really? Eh, whatever. Fine, I’ll read it.
But man,
talk about deeper meaning. This book is all about striving for something
greater and giving yourself importance. It’s fantastic. I recommend it to
everyone because I truly think it’s a universal book that has a lesson for
anyone.
# 8—Vaempires:
Revolution by Thomas Winship
Okay, now
we’re into my more standard genre. Winship really packs a punch with his debut
series Vaempires. It’s about a world
some hundred (or more?) years in the future, where humans and vampires live
peacefully together. The problem? Vampires are mutating into creatures called
vaempires, and those mutations are being shunned because of their physical differences.
Naturally, that leads to discontent. And discontent leads to war.
The
political tensions in this book are great, but it’s mostly amazing because of
the fact that the main characters are young and have to grow up quickly. There
is a lot of action and a bit of gore, so just be forewarned. Regardless, it’s
definitely worth a read.
# 7—After the
Fear by Rosanne Rivers
I could not
put this book down. It’s so good.
After the Fear is a dystopian novel about England sometime
in the future, when the country’s debt has forced them to essentially become
hermits. Everyone lives in one of 26 cities, and their federal debt is repaid
through demonstrations—gladiator-style executions of criminals. The “deliverers
of justice” are called demonstrators, and they’re prisoners in their own right.
The novel follows Sola—a girl who pissed off the wrong person and ended up a
demonstrator—as she tries to survive.
Everything
about this book rocks: the characters, the world, the plot. It’s just
fantastic.
# 6—Entangled by
Nikki Jefford
To this day,
I’m convinced Jefford did some sort of magic trick to get Entangled on my eReader. I just found it, and I fell in love with
it.
Entangled is
part one of a trilogy about witches in the modern world. It’s a young adult
series about twins in high school: an evil one and a good-ish one. The good-ish
one dies in the first few chapters (it’s in the book description, so that
wasn’t a spoiler). When she’s brought back, she tries to figure out who killed
her and why…all while sharing a body with her insane twin sister. Hilarity,
betrayal, romance, and a bit of death ensues.
# 5—Aurora Sky,
Vampire Hunter by Nikki Jefford
Okay, so the
first book is technically called Transfusion.
But tell me the series name isn’t catchier.
Transfusion is a vampire novel, but one with a fresh
twist on the genre. The world Jefford creates—namely, the mythology behind how
one becomes a vampire—is pretty dang clever and definitely different. The main
character Aurora is a stubborn, strong, and powerful heroine, and I loved every
minute of the book. This is a new adult novel, and it does have a fleeting
scene of sex in it. However, it speaks to the truth in losing virginity and
isn’t erotic in any way.
I’m addicted
to this author’s novels.
# 4—Neverwhere by
Neil Gaiman
I’m also addicted to Neil Gaiman.
I really love his work, but Neverwhere was
the first of his books that I read.
Neverwhere is
an urban fantasy set in England that follows a man with a boring life and a
nagging fiancé as he discovers the underground world of England, complete with
strange creatures, magic powers, and out of service train cars filled with
kings and lackeys.
# 3—Coraline by
Neil Gaiman
I couldn’t
quite figure out at first if Coraline is
really a children’s book. Sure, that’s the style of the narrative, but the book
is so dark. It’s a testament to
courage and what it means to be a strong person, and I fell in love with it
even as I cringed at certain scenes (read it—you’ll know what I mean). It’s
creepy. It’s dark. And it’s wonderful.
# 2—Harry Potter
and the Half-Blood Prince by J. K. Rowling
Harry was
one month older than me when the books came out. I grew up with those novels,
and they’ll always have a place on my shelf. I like Half-Blood prince best
because I think it’s the pinnacle of the series…Book 7 is a prolonged camping
trip combined with a war, and I just enjoyed #6 more.
# 1—The Hobbit by
J. R. R. Tolkien
The Hobbit is
so fun. Yes, it rambles a bit, but the voice is so lighthearted compared to the
core Lord of the Rings trilogy. It’s
really in a realm of its own, despite being tied to the trilogy. It’s lighthearted, fun, and a fantastic read.
