  1. What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
The story of Dragonwitch started with a vivid image in my head: an image of a woman on fire, standing atop a high mountain as rivers raged around her. It was such a surprising and clear image, I tried first to draw it. But that didn’t work, so I started writing little notes about it instead, asking, “Who is she?” “Why does she burn?” Eventually, the answers to those questions turned into the story of Dragonwitch.

  1. Who is your favorite character in the book?

I really love the Chronicler, the quiet, slightly stuffy, gruff-tempered young man who keeps the records of Gaheris Castle. He was a character I had written about in short stories for years before I finally sat down to Dragonwitch, and I knew I wanted him to be one of the heroes of this novel. But it took some time to really bring him to life. By the time the book was complete, however, I absolutely loved him.

  1. Which came first, the title or the novel?
The title, actually. I knew this would be the story of the Dragonwitch herself, but I wasn’t absolutely certain how the plot would unfold until I started working on it.

  1. What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

The climactic scene between the Dragonwitch and her great enemy is possibly the scene of which I’m the most proud. Everything in the story leads up to that one, enormous, dynamic moment . . . and then it’s such a brief moment. It was scary to write, but I am very pleased with how it turned out.

  1. Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?

Well, I learned that I do NOT work well without an outline! I tried to write this book several times without outlining it and wrote myself into the ground. But when I finally formed a solid outline and knew what needed to happen each step along the way, the book finally came together for me. I didn’t need to know how everything would happen, but I needed to know what. I couldn’t just write into empty space and hope something happened!

  1. What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love the energy on this cover, the movement of the character’s hair and gown. The viewer gets a strong sense of rising heat, which is very dynamic, I think.

  1. What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2013?

I’m looking forward to Raising Steam by Sir Terry Pratchett!

  1. What was your favorite book in 2012?
My favorite new book that I read in 2012 was The Heroes of the Valley by Jonathan Stroud. It came out in 2010, but I only just picked it up last year. Wonderful book! I loved every moment of it!

  1. What’s up next for you?
I am currently drafting Book 7 in the Tales of Goldstone Wood, which is under the working title of Golden Daughter. I’m hoping to see it release in late 2014 . . . but I need to finish this draft first!

  1. Is there anything that you would like to add?
