The Shadow Soul (A Dance of Dragons, #1)
When Jinji's home is destroyed, she is left with nowhere to run and no one to run to—until she meets Rhen, a prince chasing rumors that foreign enemies have landed on his shores. Masquerading as a boy, Jinji joins Rhen with vengeance in her heart. But traveling together doesn't mean trusting one another, and both are keeping a deep secret—magic. Jinji can weave the elements to create master illusions and Rhen can pull burning flames into his flesh. But while they struggle to hide the truth, a shadow lurks in the night. An ancient evil has reawakened, and unbeknownst to them, these two unlikely companions hold the key to its defeat. Because their meeting was not coincidence—it was fate. And their story has played out before, in a long forgotten time, an age of myth that is about to be reborn…

Jinji’s Tips on Pretending to be a Boy

1) Do not find a guide who never leaves well enough alone. If you are unlucky, as I was, just answer every question with another question. Not only will you evade telling the truth, but you will also annoy the breath out of your inquisitor—an added bonus.

2) Never blush. Not when he teases incessantly about your experience, or lack there of. Not when he takes you to a brothel. And definitely not when the sight of his bare behind makes you realize he sleeps in the nude.

3) Do not talk about your guide to other people. Sometimes they might make you realize things about him you never knew. You might find there are sides to him you did not see. And it is not good to think about him as anything other than a passing necessity.

4) Never try to hold his hand. Not when he just revealed something to you that he has never told someone else. Not when you hear him cry in the deep of the night. Not when you feel alone and in need of a friend.

5) Do not fall in love. Do not. Because you’ll realize how terrible your lie really was. You’ll want to tell the truth, but the truth will just make it worse.
