What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

The lead character herself. She woke me in the middle of the night, told me to get out of bed and write this down: My mom’s a witch, my dad’s a demon and I just want to be ordinary. My own life hasn’t been the same since.

Who is your favorite character in the book?

Sydlynn Hayle, without a doubt, the lead character. Partly because I’m in her head and she’s in mine, thanks to the first person storytelling. But also because we’ve been together for a long time now—well over twenty books worth—and I feel like she’s my best friend.

Which came first, the title or the novel?

The novel, though Family Magic was an easy name. It just fits the story, the family saga. Syd’s entire existence revolves around her family and the choices she makes, the magical way her family not only uses power but weaves themselves into her life.

What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

I hate to give away spoilers, but there’s a scene in the book where Syd is attending her first normal high school Halloween party. She wants so much to fit in, to be like the other kids, but can’t help herself when a fellow student is bullied in front of her. Let’s just say the demon inside her takes Syd literally when she tells the party goers they make her sick. I still snicker over it, because as a nerdy girl who hated high school, I often wished I had powers. I’m glad I didn’t, now—Syd is much more restrained and responsible than I would have been.

Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

To never, ever quit or listen to anyone who tells you you’re not good enough. Skills can be learned, but the spark of creativity, the drive to be a writer, can’t.

What do you like most about the cover of the book?

Everything! Though the blue is my favorite color, so that makes me immensely happy.

What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2015?

Winter, by Marissa Meyer. I’m totally addicted to the Lunar Chronicles.

What was your favorite book in 2014?

While it wasn’t published in 2014, I found it then—Cinder by Marissa Meyer. As I said, I adore the Lunar Chronicles and can’t wait for the next book.

 What’s up next for you?

I’m looking at the rerelease of book two of the Hayle Coven Novels, Witch Hunt, while working on a variety of other works as well as some film projects. I have so many new books coming out this year, it’s hard to focus sometimes. I’ve honestly been so excited to see Family Magic return to the world, it’s my main goal, though I’m having fun with a wild west/sci-fi series called Didi and the Gunslinger as well as a dystopian series called Cycle of 5ive. I’m always working on something! Life is never dull and I love it.

Is there anything that you would like to add?
